 Howard County Recycling Program
County Recycling Program participants may place their recyclables out all together. Metal cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles and jars can be combined with mixed paper and cardboard, without any need for bagging or binding the paper separately. One bin or see-through bag is all you need for your recyclable containers, mixed paper and cardboard. Yard waste is still placed out separately.

Recycling Cart Delivery for Residents Begins

On September 2, 2008, County Executive Ken Ulman literally "rolled out" the County's new 65-gallon wheeled recycling carts to residents in North Laurel. The new carts, tested in a pilot program with positive results, are designed to make recycling easier and more convenient for homeowners. The program is now going county-wide and all single family homes will receive 65-gallon wheeled carts, townhomes with garages 35-gallon wheeled carts and townhomes without garages 18-gallon open-top bins. You can also exchange your cart or bin for another size by calling 410-313-6444

Columbia is a census-designated place and planned community in Howard County, Maryland, United States. It is a suburb of Baltimore and, to a lesser degree, Washington, DC. It began with the idea that a city could enhance its residents' quality of life. Creator and developer James W. Rouse saw the new community in terms of human values, not just in terms of economics and engineering. Opened in 1967, Columbia was designed to not only eliminate the inconveniences of then-current subdivision design, but also eliminate racial, religious, and income segregation.

Today, Columbia has a population of about 94,600 (making it the largest unincorporated community in Maryland). By the early 2000s, the town had acquired many of the characteristics of other contemporary U.S. suburbs, such as increasingly large private homes on large parcels and "big-box" retail stores accessible mostly by automobile. Nevertheless, Rouse's ethos remains a strong influence upon the physical and political development of Columbia.
